HOPE + MIRACLE Intern (Kenya)

Cathy Karanja is a fun Kenyan girl who studies is South Africa and has come to Asia for the very first time.

She has worked with AIESEC for a year as VP OGX and is currently working in the National Support team for AIESEC South Africa. She had done a precious internship in Mauritius in the marine conservation programs being run there.

She chooses to come to Malaysia for her second internship because she is interested in the project management and event planning aspect of the project. Therefore, she had chosen MIRACLE project for her internship in Malaysia.

The MIRACLE project is a project which is concern about the environmental issues. Besides MIRACLE project, she is also joining the HOPE project which is about HIV and AIDS.  She is also passionate about creating awareness of HIV and AIDS.  This is why she will do both the HOPE project and the MIRACLE project in her second internship.

She is expects to develop and brush her organizational and development skills further, and form networks with other interns from around the world. She has only been here for a day, but she loves the culture and food in Malaysia. However, she finds the weather here is too humid and she is afraid of the lightning when raining.

She was attended her first event for the HOPE project on the same night she landed, and got to hear about the AIDS awareness program currently running in UPM such as ‘Night of HOPE’. She even got to meet and attend one of the Taiwanese singer, Peter Pan.  She initially thought that was a cartoon character, but later got to learn is a celebrity super star from Taiwan. What a surprise!!!

HOPE Intern (India)

Hi, I am Behalya Naidu from Hyderabad ,India. I am 19 years old. I am an amicable person. I love to travel and explore new places. I love spicy food especially because I come from the land of Biryani J. I am a fun loving person, always jovial . I looooooovvvvvvvvve hanging out with my buddies J.

I am perusing bachelor of computer science and I am in 2^nd year right now. I learn photography too and I just keep clicking pictures all the time.  I love adventurous sports. Rafting has been the best experience of my life.

Why I come for an exchange project? Hmm.. because I have never been overseas  before and I just love meeting new people from all around the world and it’s a new experience for me and maybe it will help me a lot in my career. I came here for an internship regarding the project HOPE which is related to HIV/AIDS and I wish to create awareness regarding HIV to most of the people in Malaysia.

The first week we had to visit a shelter home where we got to meet little children who where HIV positive. So we just wanted to entertain them and make them happy , so we made them play games, we made them dance, sing , we taught them paper folding and it was a very good experience and I felt really good watching the children smile J

Why I choose Malaysia?? Haha..To be frank, Malaysia is nearby to my country and the cost of living is quite similar. I wish to know more about Malaysian cultures, people and food. I tried the Chinese food for the first time and its pretty good. I wish to explore Malaysia during my internship period. I wish to visit Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Penang, Twin Towers etc. 

Before I leave Malaysia I would like to take lots of happy unforgettable memories along with me J. I would definitely love to come back to Malaysia if I get an opportunity  J. Thank you guys for reading my blog! Keep looking for more updates!!J

Volunteering at Pink Triangle Foundation

Every Wednesday of my internship I go to PT Foundation as a volunteer. This is my first experience in the NGO. PTF is an organization devoted to HIV / AIDS issues in Malaysia. Before I go there, I was expecting that is a very large organization,  there is a very serious and tense atmosphere. However, when I went there for the first time, I saw that the atmosphere is very warm, all very friendly and kind. Feel that you know them very long. And it also good, that you feel free in asking somebody different questions.

It was very nice to meet interesting and different people there. A lot of volunteers and interns from all over the world work there. Only here you can realize how truly the whole world united against AIDS and HIV. 

Regard to my work, my support to this fund. What I did for a few weeks can’t be called direct help in the fight against AIDS.  Julian, HR-manager, knowing that I have a background in accounting, said that they are need of some help in the Department of Finance. So, my help was to check all payment vouchers in the folders with the documents, to sort and arrange a lot of accounting files for the next audit.

And I can say I have almost a professional internship in PT Foundation =).

In fact, it's great that in Malaysia such organization is existing and successfully operating. This foundation has a huge contribution to society, in support of HIV-infected AIDS patients. All is not hopeless, while there are people who are interested in this issue and providing assistance.

SMK St. John

This was our first workshop we had on Wednesday and so we couldn’t go to the PT Foundation. And it was also the first workshop we hold with Jason.

Jason is the new intern from Philippines for HOPE. We are very glad to meet him and hope that we will have much fun with him during the workshops. But in St. John he just observed.

St. John’s secondary school is a very nice one. The building is old and it is built in a British way. In St. John there are only male students, but we didn’t know that before, so it was a bit confusing for us. But the boys are very kindly and happy about seeing us. We are always like a tourist attraction maybe because Alex and I look so different.

 

We hold the workshop in a big, beautiful hall. But unfortunately the acoustic wasn’t that good so the students couldn’t understand us as well. And that was the reason why they got more and more less concentrated. 

But Alex and I tried our best to raise their interest in the topic and we played some games with them. It was very funny, for them and also for us.

SMK Bukit Jalil

On Tuesday, 29/03/2011 we had two workshops in the same school. The difference to the workshops before was, that we hold our presentation in front of secondary students. Alex and I were very excited about them, how they behave and work with us. But we would not had to worry about it. 

The first workshop on Tuesday was with 13 years old kids. They were awesome, very interested in the issue and concentrated on what we are talking about.

 

But unfortunately we weren’t allowed to show them how they have to use a condom. Sure they are still very young, but I think it is important to teach them about it. They do not learn much about sex and prevention in school as their teacher told us. So their parents have to. But what if they don’t?

In German schools the children have the first “contact” with the sexuality issue at the age of 8. They learn in school how their body works and that it is very important to prevent themselves from different kind of diseases. 

Our second workshop in SMK Bukit Jalil was in front of 14 to 15 year old students. It was also great fun to talk with them. But those students were more impudent and a bit pert. But I think they got the point and know now a lot about HIV/Aids and that they should not create a distance towards themselves and HIV+ people.
