Every Wednesday of my internship I go to PT Foundation as a volunteer. This is my first experience in the NGO. PTF is an organization devoted to HIV / AIDS issues in Malaysia. Before I go there, I was expecting that is a very large organization, there is a very serious and tense atmosphere. However, when I went there for the first time, I saw that the atmosphere is very warm, all very friendly and kind. Feel that you know them very long. And it also good, that you feel free in asking somebody different questions.

It was very nice to meet interesting and different people there. A lot of volunteers and interns from all over the world work there. Only here you can realize how truly the whole world united against AIDS and HIV.

Regard to my work, my support to this fund. What I did for a few weeks can’t be called direct help in the fight against AIDS. Julian, HR-manager, knowing that I have a background in accounting, said that they are need of some help in the Department of Finance. So, my help was to check all payment vouchers in the folders with the documents, to sort and arrange a lot of accounting files for the next audit.

And I can say I have almost a professional internship in PT Foundation =).

In fact, it's great that in Malaysia such organization is existing and successfully operating. This foundation has a huge contribution to society, in support of HIV-infected AIDS patients. All is not hopeless, while there are people who are interested in this issue and providing assistance.

This was our first workshop we had on Wednesday and so we couldn’t go to the PT Foundation. And it was also the first workshop we hold with Jason.

Jason is the new intern from Philippines for HOPE. We are very glad to meet him and hope that we will have much fun with him during the workshops. But in St. John he just observed.

St. John’s secondary school is a very nice one. The building is old and it is built in a British way. In St. John there are only male students, but we didn’t know that before, so it was a bit confusing for us. But the boys are very kindly and happy about seeing us. We are always like a tourist attraction maybe because Alex and I look so different.

We hold the workshop in a big, beautiful hall. But unfortunately the acoustic wasn’t that good so the students couldn’t understand us as well. And that was the reason why they got more and more less concentrated.

But Alex and I tried our best to raise their interest in the topic and we played some games with them. It was very funny, for them and also for us.

On Tuesday, 29/03/2011 we had two workshops in the same school. The difference to the workshops before was, that we hold our presentation in front of secondary students. Alex and I were very excited about them, how they behave and work with us. But we would not had to worry about it.

The first workshop on Tuesday was with 13 years old kids. They were awesome, very interested in the issue and concentrated on what we are talking about.

But unfortunately we weren’t allowed to show them how they have to use a condom. Sure they are still very young, but I think it is important to teach them about it. They do not learn much about sex and prevention in school as their teacher told us. So their parents have to. But what if they don’t?

In German schools the children have the first “contact” with the sexuality issue at the age of 8. They learn in school how their body works and that it is very important to prevent themselves from different kind of diseases.

Our second workshop in SMK Bukit Jalil was in front of 14 to 15 year old students. It was also great fun to talk with them. But those students were more impudent and a bit pert. But I think they got the point and know now a lot about HIV/Aids and that they should not create a distance towards themselves and HIV+ people.

Properly the date for our workshop in UPM was 2 days before. But on Tuesday we had no audience. I think there was a little communication problem. But a teacher invited Alex and me to hold our workshop in his class. We were happy about this opportunity that we can still talk with the UPM students about HIV/AIDS.

On Thursday Alex and I went to DKFEM-3, like Germans always on time, but no one was there. Eng May told us that classes in Malaysia always start 10-20 minutes later. We still have to learn a lot about the Malaysian thinking .

Soon or later we had our workshop in front of about 50 students, a good result I think comparing to Tuesday.

The workshop was during regular class time, so we had not so much time to talk to the students. Unfortunately Alex and I had to shorten our presentation. But the students were active and asked a lot of questions. So we had a lot of fun and we raised awareness about HIV and AIDS. It is always a great feeling to know that the people know now more about HIV and know the way to live with it or with HIV+ people.

Workshop and Shelter home visitation

The workshop on 19.03.11 was the second one we held. This time it was a little more complicated than the first time. A male nurse presented his work with HIV-positive patients right before us. Of course he didn’t just tell us about his experience but also about HIV/AIDS in general. He actually did my presentation for me. This meant I had to cut my speech short, though this time we had to fill about two hours of workshop, which was very difficult because we could only fill around one hour.

Fortunately we had enough condoms to stretch the demonstration of “how to put on a condom correctly”. In addition we played a short game, where all participants stood in a circle, held each other by the hand but not of someone next to one another and then tried to form a circle again. This game actually showed how important communication is, for instants in a relationship, to avoid misunderstandings and to prevent complications no matter how uncomfortable it is, especially concerning HIV/AIDS.

The only thing that bothered me a little, it was kind of intimidating to present in front of an expert, as we were afraid of getting bad feedback because of false information, even though we knew that all of our information are correct.

After we held our presentation and after we showed the AIESEC Message video, we asked the students to each write a message to the kids at the HIV shelter, which could be anything they wanted to say to them. Some wrote just short phrases like “stay strong” or “we love you” and some even quoted songs e.g. Bruno Mars, “you’re amazing just the way you are”. It didn’t matter to me how long or how creative each message was, but every single one was something special and very moving!

Later that day we (me, Carolin and the students) visited a shelter for HIV-positive people. As we arrived I had some mixed feelings. Even though we were the ones teaching about HIV/AIDS, it was our first contact with HIV-positive people.

I knew that nothing would happen and there was no chance of getting infected, though I still asked myself the question “what if?”. It was stuck in my head. What I always had to be aware of, I couldn’t show any fears or second thoughts in front of the students. You shouldn’t sell the product if you don’t believe in it! I did believe in what I taught, though the first reality check isn’t always easy to take.

What was very surprising, we didn’t visited children but adults in their late 30s till 90s. After a french nurse showed us around and told us a lot about the course of the disease we went to talk, communicate and play with the patients. It was very scary to see how the virus and the medication can affect your brain and disable your body. Seeing people who lost their sight, who couldn’t walk and were mentally deranged was very shocking and really pushed our awareness.

But the most incredible feeling was, to see them smiling and laughing when I played and/or talked to them. I could see they were having a good time and it meant the world to them if you touched them by laying your arm around, hugging, shaking hands or even just a high five once in a while. Amazing how much difference such a small gesture makes…

IMU - International Medical University

This was my first workshop for the HOPE Project with AIESEC and I was a bit nervous before.The IMU is a nice university. The building is very huge and modern. Original it was a shopping mall and the escalators are still in use. The establishment was impressive, a lot of medical stuff.

There were about 20 students and they were great. The medical students have been very interested. That made it easier for us.

First we played a little game with them to break the ice and get more relaxed. We all had much fun.Although I was a bit nervous the workshop went well. The students were interested and asked many questions afterwards.

I think this is a good response for us. They asked us about the biological tissue, but also about the prevention. I was happy that we could raise awareness about HIV/AIDS even by medical students which already know a lot about the topic.

At the end of our workshop we did a condom demonstration. The girls and the boys were laughing about it. But I think they got it. Now they know how to use a condom and to tell them is one part of our job.

After the workshop we had lunch together und we were asked a lot about ourselves and our country. It was nice to see, that the students are really interested in us and our workshop.

That was the last workshop of the second batch interns with a lot of memories. We came to the school just in time and started the sessions right after arivring. When we come to the venue, everything was prepared very well. All the students were ready to learn new things related to HIV and AIDS.

We held some games firstly to wake them up and help them to be less nervous before going to the main topic. After that, we showed them the video which is about AIESEC to help them know more about our organization and our internship program. And lucky , after the workshop, some audiences were curious about AIESEC and asked questions related.

After game and video we started with our presentation which is the last one I joined 2 smart girls of our second batch. To tell the truth, we lack of sleep and we were all sleepy before that because of very beautiful musical party the night before. However, when we run the workshop, we were very good and did not get any mistakes because the atmosphere there makes us excited.

Frankly, the students were a little bit shy when talking about HIV, condom or sex, but with our games, they did very well and answered exactly the questions raised. And the importance thing is that we always get from the school is enthusiasm and friendliness. They provided us with foods and drink, which makes our group more interested and powerful.

The last workshop was not special, but it is unforgetable workshop in my internship because that is the last opportunity for me to meet and to cooperate with other members in group. I want to say thank you to them because of the long time they stand by me and what I gain from them.

SMK Tunku Ampuan Durah, Seremban

That is one of our memorable workshops when we all together went to our OCP’s home town which is very beautiful and peaceful. Thanks to Eng May, we had chance to go to the local night market where we can get a variety of interesting foods including Indian food, Malaysian food, and Chinese food.

The night we prepared the red ribbons together is when I remember most. We made so many ribbons to deliver students in the workshops, we had so much fun together and so many good pictures together to memorize our beautiful moment in our lives.

The workshop in Seramban is also one of the best workshop we have done. Frankly, there are nearly 140 audiences joining the workshop. But, we knew about that before, so that we prepared some suitable sessions for the workshop.

Firstly, students had chance to play a Vietnamese game to make friends and to do exercise before getting new information. Next, we show them a short video about AIESEC and fortunately, after that children feel curious with AIESEC and some want to become Aiesecers in the future. That makes me very happy and motivated.

After showing video, we presented HIV and AIDS as normal, play True and false game. Not only that, the different thing of this project is the participation of Eng May and another Aiesecer who help us to run condom demonstration session.

Because of the big group of students, we divided them into 2 groups, one joined condom demonstration while the other share with interns their feelings and their plan. That is the good opportunity for us to get to know more about teenagers and their concern. To tell the truth, the students are quite shy, but by enthusiasm, we did a good job, shared with them about our countries and experiences.

Thanks AIESEC for giving us the chance to work together and understand more about children.

SMK Bukit Bandaraya & SMK Pulau Indah

On 24^th Feb ,we run 2 very nice workshops about HIV/ AIDS. Two workshops were run in 2 secondary schools in KL with more than 50 participants each workshop.

The facilities were really good and the school did support us a lot, that encourages us to make the presentation better. In fact, we faced a lot of difficulties and drawbacks because the two schools are very far from each other and we did not know how to take public transport to go back. And we were very worried about that; however, thanks so support from UPM’s driver and the teacher in the schools, we did have a very nice day with two good workshops.

About the first workshop, we received good feedback from school and they invited us to enjoy very nice meal there.

For the second workshop, it was really far from the first workshop and it takes us 2 hours by car from the first to the second workshop.We did have a discussion whether we should teach them such as English, games, dance, and so on. And the workshop start earlier than in plan.

The audiences are 14 years old, and fortunately, they are quite good at English .To tell the truth, our workshop is not as normal, it was much simpler, but that was the happiest workshop in my internship so far.

We had a huge amount of time to share with children, to play and to chat with them. And I realize that countryside kids are very lovely, friendly. We were the first group going to the school and teach them something special. And after all, that is an unforgettable day in my life and we can deal with any challenging in our lives if having HOPE.

Frankly, each workshop helps us to gain more knowledge about problems and issues and catch up with what is happening in the world. In addition, when searching information about the issues, we see a number of unlucky people who need our help and so that we reach more effort to devote to the project that protect human beings from HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

I want to say thank you to HOPE project and PTF because you give us very good opportunities to make friends, integrate with many people from different countries and areas in the world.

It was a day of fun and glamour under a canopy of azure blue sky as around 300 of participants had taken part in HIV/AIDS Awareness Run that held in Ekspo Hill , UPM on 27^th March 2011.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Run is organized under HOPE project by AIESEC in UPM with the aim to raise the awareness on HIV/AIDS issue among the public . It is also an effort to eliminate stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV/AIDS .

Experiences Sharing by HOPE Project Interns -Alexander and Caroline that came from Germany. They had shared their experience to all the participants about workshop being conducted ,visitation to shelter home and volunteering jobs at Pink Triangle Foundation.

Furthermore, Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) and Pink Triangle Foundation (PTF), were took part in this event to educate the participants in the knowledge of creating awareness towards issues about HIV/AIDS by setting up HIV/AIDS Education Booth.

Besides that, Rumah Solehah had took part in the educational booth as well. It is the half-way home for women and children living with HIV/AIDS and also under the patronage of Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia.

Alongside the HIV/AIDS Awareness Run , 988 Radio Station ,which is the official Chinese Radio Station for the event had send their 988 Happy Cruiser to Expo Hill .Numerous prizes were gave out to the winners of the interactive games by Happy Cruiser .

The top ten winners in male and female categories received their prize respectively by Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan , President of Malaysian AIDS Council ( MAC ) at the end of the event .

This video was created by the HOPE and MIRACLE 1st batch interns 2011 in AIESEC University Putra Malaysia. Six people from five different countries, four different continents: Ivy Cheng and Olivia Ho from Hong Kong, Jessica Malcolm from Australia, Mike Pagalakis from Greece, Pedro Bandeira from Brazil and Quentin Delacroix from Belgium. We had been in Malaysia for six weeks participating in two Development Internships, one based on raising awareness among youth about HIV and AIDS and the other on addressing the issues of the environment and sustainability in Malaysia.

We are all very proud for having this unique, life changing AIESEC Experience. We had the chance to develop ourselves further in several areas such as presentation skills, communication skills, management skills, teamwork. We each realized new potentials, challenged our preconceived ideas and expanded our global network and horizons.

The last workshop was a prize for us (First Batch HOPE Interns) because the students were very easy to work with, very confident with theirselves and very responsive.

These components were critical in attempting the interactive activities we falicitaded. From the one side the experience we have gained through our previous workshops, from the other side those unique students, composed in my opinion the most successful and impactful workshop we have facilitated so far.

Furthermore, the second batch HOPE Project interns attended the workshop.

We gave them the chance to participate at the activities in order to help them feel more confident with theirselves and gain some experience in anticipation to the coming workshop that they will facilitate.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Serdang (1)

On 08 February 2010, the first batch of interns for the Hope Project attended our second last workshop. This was held at SMK Sri Serdang, which is walking distance from UPM. We gave our presentation to one group of around 30 students. The room in which the workshop was held was not ideal, as there were desks placed in the middle, and the students sat around the edges of the room. However it seemed that all students could see the computer projection, and hear our voices. The school kindly provided gifts to use as motivators for the students during activities.

It was very lucky we had these gifts, as the students were extremely shy. On several occasions it took more than five minutes to get one person to answer a single question. It would probably be better if we thought about how to smoothly move on to another question if a volunteer is going to be so difficult to procure. The teacher told us at the end that the shyness mainly stems from their lack of confidence in English speaking. However, we really do need them to repeat some of our main messages, as otherwise we do not know whether they understood them. Some students asked to privately say the answer before speaking it to the class, so they clearly had an issue of confidence in talking to the entire room.

The teacher also provided us additional feedback. Her suggestion was to include some shocking pictures or videos at the start to grab the students’ attention. Her examples were some pictures of gross skin deformities and scabs, taken from a Malay brochure about HIV/AIDS. My belief however, is that these pictures are factually inaccurate, and are inappropriately playing on emotion. Skin problems are far less common in HIV and AIDS than such symptoms as coughs and general malaise. The aesthetics of the skin pictures may contribute to discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients, which is something we are trying to eliminate. The idea of including an introductory video, however, is a good one. Perhaps we can show the video of celebrities promoting the AIDS Aware campaign, which was made with PT Foundation.

Very kindly, the school gave us gifts of appreciation, and also provided the interns afternoon tea after the workshop.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Infant Jesus Convent School 2

On the 22th of January, Hope Project Interns went to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Infant Jesus Convent School again for our 5th workshop. We had prepared slides in power point and also on cardboard.

We also had prepared games so that the students could actively involve in the learning process. These included the game called high- medium-low- no risk in which we asked two teams of 15 students to participate and decide whether the statements that they were given are no-low-medium or high risk of getting infected from HIV.

It is important to say that during the two teams were playing the game the rest students were also paricipating because the had the statements too... This avtivity was very impactful and interactive because we made clear not only which were the correct answers but also why.

The second activity was the true or false game. In this one the students had to decided whether the statements they were given are true or false. This game gave as the chance to aswer all the question the students had during the whole presentation...

From the one side making an impactful presentation with 200 students is quite impossible. From the other side i think that this workshop was really successful because we already had a satisfactory enough experience and it was easier for us to keep the attention of the students.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Infant Jesus Convent School

On the 21 of January the Hope Project Interns went to

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Infant Jesus Convent School in Melaka.

This is the first time we have our workshop in small group of around 50 students. Still, we didn’t have the ice-breaking game as we found the game “Move-if” not suitable for form 5 students. To me, the beginning is the most important part as if it is well-thought; we can have attention from the audience throughout the presentation. We didn’t manage to have an astounding one, but I suggest that we might put in a short video of “Counting down for 8 seconds” and end it with a statement “In every 8 seconds like what we just counted, one person dies from AIDS.”

Jessica introduced the difference of HIV &AIDS, and illustrated how HIV attacks immune system.Mike told them how it is spread and what’s safe to do with people living HIV. Jessica reminded the students of QQR. Then, it’s my turn to tell them how to prevent HIV and conducted the first activity “High risk and Low Risk Action”. Pedro continued with the blood test and treatment. After that, I passed them the message of anti-discrimination to the AIDS patients and more information of NGOs that deals with AIDS.

Regarding the first activity, we had it in four groups this time and each of us went into the group and discussed with them. I like this arrangement as we interacted more with the students, but the sense of competition among groups would be lessened as they might change the answers after they get hints from us. Generally, the categorization of those actions is a bit controversial, as some actions may fall between two groups, and it’s hard for us to give a clear-cut answer, this might confuse the students and does not give them a clear message.

Concerning the second activity, the response was good as we asked for true or false. But when we asked for the reason like “why do you think using condom is 99% effective?”, it’s hard for them to reply as it is exactly what I have just mentioned in the presentation and there’s no solid reason for that statement. Thus, I think we could skip “why” questions on some all-known facts. Besides, I have found that almost all students are confused with the statement “If I have AIDS, I have to take many drugs for the rest of my life.” This might reflect that we should modify the presentation on treatment part to reinforce this message.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Hartmas

On January 18 the Hope Project Interns went to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Hartmas for our first HIV/AIDS workshop.We had prepared slides in Powerpoint and also on cardboard, with the expectation that around 50 students would be in the audience. Games had been prepared to get every student actively involved in the learning process. These included an ice-breaking game, and some games throughout the presentation to reinforce the message.

We were informed on the evening of 17 January that in fact around 200 students would be present for one workshop. This meant that the workshop would be less interactive than we had hoped. We therefore eliminated the ice-breaking game, since it involved self-introductions and running around by the audience.

Once the microphone was working, things went well for the first 10 minutes of the presentation. However, after this, a large group of late students entered the room. This disrupted the session, and also meant that there were a large number of people now in the audience who had not heard some important messages at the beginning of the presentation. From this point, we had some trouble controlling noise in the room.

For the high-risk/low-risk game, we chose two groups of 10 (one group of boys ad one group of girls) to compete against each other for points at the front of the hall. Involving everyone in the game was impossible given the numbers. This game went alright, as we explained each answer at the end.

In order to involve the entire audience as much as possible in the “true-false”game, we used candies as an incentive to get members of the audience to raise their hands and answer questions. This worked ok, as there were a number of students who were quite enthusiastic. However there were also many students who did not participate. This dynamic however would be common amongst any group of 14 year-olds.

At the end, we rounded off the presentation by getting students to ask any questions they had. There were a number of good questions. We then quickly introduced each of our countries.

The feedback we received from AIESEC LC members who observed the workshop, was that we sometimes talked too fast, or with too much of a strong accent. We decide to take extra care with this issue at the next workshop. Audibility would also have been hindered by the persistent murmuring of students at the back of the hall.

Overall, considering our surprise at having to present for 200 people, the workshop went well, and boosted our confidence for future sessions. Although it was not as interactive as we had hoped, we believe most students learnt at least something about HIV/AIDS by the end of the session.

Volunteering at Pink Triangle Foundation

On the 12^th of January, Mike, Olivia, Pedro and I went to Pink Triangle Foundation (PTF) in Kuala Lumpur to help out. PTF is an organization devoted to HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia. It was founded in 1987, and has grown since then to encompass divisions that assist five populations vulnerable to HIV. These groups are sex workers, drug users, transsexuals, men-who-have –sex-with-men (MSM), and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

We met some friendly employees and volunteers at the headquarters, which also acts as the MSM division. One task sponsored by PTF that is vital to HIV prevention, is the distribution of safe-sex packs. The other interns and I spent most of the day packing condoms, lubricant and information cards about PTF and safe sex. This was quite a relaxing way to spend the day. During this time, we were able to chat to some workers at the organization about the obstacles they face in the fight against the spread of HIV and against HIV related discrimination. One problem due to underfunding is that only bare bones management team can be formed. Further impediments to efficiency include institutionalized homophobia and the general taboo against open sexuality in society. For example, we were told that the presence of condoms (our hand packed safe sex kits!) in gay venues can be used as evidence against a club for hosting “illicit” activities.

Despite these obstacles however, if it weren’t for PTF, countless more lives would have been lost to HIV. Since the evolution of HIV in the 1980s that lead to it becoming a world-wide epidemic, 13,000 people have died of AIDS in Malaysia. The tireless efforts of PTF in providing testing and counseling, as well as distributing information, and of course, condoms, must have saved and prolonged many lives, and also reduced a lot of confusion and suffering.

Mike, Pedro, Olivia and I are grateful to being able to spend our time being involved with PTF, and we hope our visits over the next month can help prevent the spread of HIV and HIV-related discrimination!

The delegate's fee is RM18 per person including breakfast and lunch. Since we are also doing this for charity so a part of the fees will be donated to the HIV/AIDS shelters.

It will be a fun-filled event and at the same time getting more exposure to global issues like HIV/AIDS. Sweet goodbye ... or is it see you later?

Dear Fans,

For the last time this is the first batch of the HOPE Project 2010: Tangulu, Pauline, Jessica, Sarah and Dorien. With a tear on our cheeck and a smile on our face we say goodbye to you all. Hopefully it is not goodbye at all, but a 'see you later at some time, some where...'

During the last six weeks...

- We have educated more than 500 students on HIV/AIDS
- We were warmly welcomed in 5 Malaysian Schools and 1 university
- We worked closely together with 2 NGO's
- We have visited 4 shelters for people living with HIV/AIDS

The numbers are nice but actually that is not what counts the most. What will stay with us forever is:

- The warm welcome at the schools and the eagerness and curiosity of the students
- Playing with the really cute and sweet children, enjoying their childhood even though they are HIV+
- The house wife who still feels blessed even though she is HIV+ because at least now she can help other people
- The transgenders who have HIV, but are above all positive and make sure that they smile, laugh and enjoy life every single day
- The drug user who lived on the street but found a way out and is now happily married and helping other people who are in the same situation he was in and opens his house and heart to them
- The doctor who is retired but comes to work in the community shelter every day, helps the patients and makes them feel loved and wanted
- The french family who gave up their known and comfortable environment to use their knowledge for something meaningful
- The patient who helps the other patients to walk again

These are the just a couple of the examples of the situations and people who made this a life changing experience for us.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible:
- The AIESEC'ers at UPM: you are amazing! It was a great pleasure to get to know you all, thank you for everything you guys and girls did and for making it an unforgetable summer for us. We loved your spirit and your friendship, lah ;)

Dear Fans of HOPE,

it is time for change in the HOPE project at UPM, and this is what it looks like. For the first time, this is the second batch of interns - Alkistis (Greece), Ahmed (Egypt), Dimitris (Greece), Leke (UK), Rawan (Egypt), Sarah (Egypt) and Tim (Germany) - sharing their experiences with you.

In our first week of the project our focus lay on getting the knowledge about HIV/AIDS and about facilitating workshops. For this, we were lucky enough to have a two-day training session with our project partners at the Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia along with interns and AIESECers from all over the country.

The Train-the-Trainers Conference was centered around the question of how to convey important messages on the issue of HIV/AIDS to different audiences. There was time for students new to the subject to pose their questions and for experienced members to share their knowledge and stories.

We thank everyone who participated, and a special thank you to the facilitators of the Standard Chartered Bank and AIESEC, and the organizing committee from the Universiti Malaya for their effort and dedication.

Highlight at the end of the week on Sunday was a visit together with the CrusAIDSers from IMU (International Medical University) to Rumah Jaireh, a home for children with HIV. It was simply heart-warming to interact with the kids aged three to ten. After a short overview of the home's history by the children's mother Dr. Lucy Campos, and an introduction round to get to know everyone we spend three hours playing and laughing with the children. Their energy and spirit was very inspiring and the visit to Rumah Jaireh was a very good start into the next round of HOPE.

Thank you again to the CrusAIDSers for letting us participate in this visit.

Next up in the coming week, we will be conducting our first workshops at UPM on Monday and Tuesday, and be visiting WELCOME Community Home on Monday morning and the Malaysian AIDS Council on Tuesday Morning. On Thursday we will be having a Global Village on the campus to show people more of our home countries, with another workshop for the Junior Members of AIESEC UPM.

It's going to be awesome!

Dear Fans,

It is a pleasure to share our experiences with you and we can only hope that through the messages and words we post, we can transmit at least a little bit the lessons and incredible insights we gain from working on the HOPE project.

On tuesday, 10th of August, we were very warmly welcomed in 'Rumah Solehah', a shelter for Moslim women and children. We were touched by the hospitaly which included a very nice lunch prepared by the women living in the house, a beautiful performance by the children and some very nice bracelets. Everytime we visit a shelter we are amazed by the openess and warmth of the residents. Despite their challenging situations and painful past they still share their stories in a brave and direct way. They look for ways to make life better for themselves and even more for the people around them. It is an honor for us to spend time with them, to share a lunch, give a hug and most of all to learn from them. We want to thank everyone and especially also the matron to give us an unforgetable experience. An experience that makes us more open, more aware and teaches us to appreciate everything we have even more.

We also had the pleasure to share this experience and our knowledge on HIV/AIDS with the students at the International Medical University (IMU) yesterday. We really enjoyed giving this workshop and answering the clever questions the students asked. We really enjoyed your cooperation, insights and views. Thank you all!

And yet another exciting event is coming up: the train-the-trainers conference on HIV/AIDS by Standard Chartered Bank in Kuala Lumpur which we are attending on friday and saturday. We will tell you all about in our next message.

We are enjoying all our experiences as much as possible, since a couple of us are going home soon... :(.... On the other hand, new trainees for the project have arrived, again from different parts of the world: Greece, Germany, UK & Egypt. They will shortly introduce themselves to you extensively.

Hi Fans,

Here we are again after a great collaboration with the Pink Triangle Foundation (PTF).

We had the pleasure to volunteer at their Carnivale last Saturday which was a very nice event. We met lots of great and brave people: PTF staff and volunteers, the people from the neighbourhood Chow Kit and nice visitors. It gave us a great feeling to be able to contribute and it was another 'mind opening' experience. Meeting sex workers, trans-genders and drug users, having conversations with them and learning that they are people like you and I. Sometimes they had a choice and sometimes they didn't, they all are human and deserve a good life.

We realized that once more when we talked to a couple of the PTF staff and volunteers yesterday. We learned that most of the women that are infected with HIV/AIDS are innocent house wives. Another story was that of a drug user who lived on the street and was offered a second chance to a good life by an NGO. He now dedicates his life to help people that are in the same situation as he was by opening his house and heart.

These experiences and stories are extremely unique for us and allow us to make the project more impactful and to have more understanding for each and every person no matter what they do or what situation they are in.

We conclude with a very big thank you to everyone at PTF for enriching our experience!

New experiences and encounters

Hi Fans,

Long time no see... so here we are again with an update. After a relaxing weekend we have had a week filled with visits to NGO's and some workshops.

On tuesday, 27th of July we visited the PT Foundation who are organizing an event this saturday where we will volunteer with other HOPE interns from UM and other NGO's and volunteers. We are really looking forward to it and will update you in detail =)!

Yesterday we had a very touching and inspiring visit to Rumah Wake I, II and III. Rumah Wake provides support and a home for women, transsexuals and children infected with HIV/AIDS. This time we didn't just talk about HIV/AIDS but experienced what the virus can do in real life. We were touched by the openness and optimism of the residents. Despite the hurt, both physically and mentally, they still find the courage to make the best of life and to stay positive no matter what. This was really inspiring for us and we believe we can learn from their strength and optimism. Thank you so much to the staff and residents to open their house and heart for us and to teach us this incredibly valuable lesson!

We used that inspiration today while giving two workshops at SMKA Maahad Hamidiah to another 100 students. Yet again we were amazed by the warm welcome and enthusiasm of the
staff and students. These guys and girls were very active, alert and really understood the key points we delivered.

It is becoming more and more clear to us that the HOPE project isn't just a volunteering project but an incredible gift and life experience for all of us =)!

Hi Fans,
Here we are again =).

Yet another day of the HOPE Project AIESEC UPM and yet another very nice workshop! Today we had the pleasure to visit the school SMK Seksyen 3 Bandar Kinrara.

We met some really great students there who were very motivated to learn more about HIV/AIDS and were very active during our workshop! Have a look at the video at the end of this post, to experience just how active they were =)!

We must say that we couldn't have imagined a better start of the Hope Project. In three days we have visited 3 schools, have delivered 4 workshops and ................. (drum roll) ...........................

We left each school with a feeling of gratefulness and intense joy!

Hi Fans,

We are writing this message with a big smile on our faces =) because we had two amazing and heartfelt workshops today at SMK Puchong Perdana! The students were really eager to learn and both them and the staff gave us a very nice welcome.

In total there were 102 students present today. We really had a great time giving them more information on HIV/AIDS and want to thank them for being so open and active. It was a pleasure to be with them.

Today we delivered our first workshop in the school SMK Puchong Utama. It was a great pleasure and honor for us. We would like to thank the students for the warm welcome they gave us and for their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. We couldn't have imagined a better start =D.

During our workshops we give students more information on:

- What is HIV/AIDS?

- How can you get HIV/AIDS?

- What can you do to protect yourself?

- How can we live with AIDS? From the perspective of people infected with HIV and from the perspective of society.

With this workshops we hope to make a difference, raise awareness and limit the number of people that are infected by HIV/AIDS.

We are very motivated and are really looking forward to the next three workshops which are planned this week =D! We will keep you posted! Watch this space ...

Dear visitors !

A new recruit has joined our ranks, her name is Meera, she comes from the UK and is studying linguistics and spanish at the university of Southampton.

We had two workshops since the last time we posted a message on this blog and they both went incredibly well.

The first one was directed at form VI students, most of them were 18 years old and really enjoyed our presentation, even tough from the feedback they gave us they wished we had had a condom demonstration. This will definitely be included in the next workshop, do not worry !

They were very open about HIV/AIDS and asked very challenging questions such as how does breat milk get infected? Can I get infected through oral sex? How long does it take the virus to spread?

We played the famous bang bang game which was an immediate success. No matter what age our audience is, they always enjoy it very much.

The second workshop, the one we had on thursday, was a bit of a challenge because we were expecting two groups of 40 students and we had one big group of 70 so we had to quickly re-organise ourselves into one big team, re-distribute the roles and come up with effective ways of keeping their attention at all times. Even though the group was much bigger than usual, the session ran smoothly and each of us joined them during group discussions.

It was nice to hear first-hand what sex education is like in Malaysia, especially in public schools where they rarely talk about sex and drugs. Most them had never seen a condom in their lives and were curious to know how it worked, and how it was supposed to be used.

We believe that being slighlty older than them was a good factor that made communication between us and them quite easy and honest. Most of them agreed that this had been one of the best presentations they had at their school.

It was heart-warming to get such a positive feedback, it only encouraged us even further to made our presentation perfect (we've been improving it after every single workshop) and we hope that the next batch of interns will add their own ideas to it.

So far, this has been an amazing and enriching experience and we hope that if, just like us, you care about education and health then do not hesitate to join the HOPE Project and help us to keep making a difference !

Dear fans !!

It is my greater honour to tell you that our team of motivated volunteers performed their first workshop on Thursday and the outcome exceed our expectations.

The students walked in the room, welcomed by the “A-punk Vampire Weekend” song (you should download it, it’s awesome) and if at first they were pretty loud, they soon settled down and started paying undivided attention to what we had to tell them about HIV/AIDS. We split up into two groups, dividing equally personalities and knowledge about the topic. We played ice-breaking games with them, we had quizzes and Q&A. They very much enjoyed it and the feedback they gave us was fantastic: they thanked us for going to their school, saying it was the best presentation they had ever seen. Which was both relieving and heart-warming.

We received a certificate from the main teacher, so all of us stood up and took pictures with it. We had pictures with as a team in front of the ppt, then with the entire class, then with the class and the teachers. It was a pretty awesome moment, it gave us meaning as we finally got to performed what we came to Malaysia for. It was a great feeling.

By the way, our new trainee from Hong Kong has arrived, her name is Maria and she’s really cool. Can’t wait to get to know her better !

Our next workshops are going to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday so we’ll keep you updated !

Third Wave!

Yo yo yo everyone !!

So after a lot of hard work the Project Team managed to raise sessions with schools and UPM itself but it will not happen because the uni closed down for a week due to a couple of swine flu cases !

Nooooo !!!

But the trainees and the OC still have faith and we're getting ready to make the best workshop on the 7th of August in a school near the uni, we will let you know how it goes !!

Second Wave!

Dear visitors !

Here comes the second post of the volunteers blog !!

We've had a very busy start of the week, spending our entire monday cold calling schools to arrange meetings and dates for our workshop, which is approved by the Higher Ministry of Education and sponsored by the Standard Chartered Bank (yep, we are a BIG DEAL).

After some succesful and less succesful calls, we managed to raise a meeting for this week with a school. We were really proud of this first achievement when we found out at the meeting tonight that this school is the one farthest away from town! One-hour drive apparently! Ouch! Hopefully we'll get a friendly AIESECer to get us there (AIESECers if you are reading this: HINT-HINT).

Tomorrow morning me, our Boss Elaine, Ripple and this other friendly girl from AIESEC are going to three different schools near UPM to arrange meetings and dates to run the workshop. Wish us luck !!

First Wave !

The fabulous and fresh new team of international interns from Korea, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and the UK are proud to welcome you the HOPE Project for the months of July and August 08-09 !!!
We have been adapting to Malaysian lifestyle and very much enjoying the weather, the food and the smiley locals! Last week was our first training by other international students who have been running workshops on HIV/AIDS before us. They were really friendly and their training was very informative and useful as they managed to keep it informal but relevant. We also met two Dutch Ambassadors, Rutger and Nard, who are awesome. They gave us training on personal goal-setting and marketing.
Yesterday was another big day for us as we had our first meeting with everyone split into different groups to contact the schools. We’ve got a massive list of more than 200 schools!! The plan is to get in touch with as many of them as possible between now and Monday, when we’ll meet up again.
We will keep you updated on our progress.

This is dedicated to all OC, all Faci, everyone who helped us.

And, it's specially dedicated to all delegates!

And to people who didn't know what was Mission Possible Conference, this is for you too! :)

MPC is a conference aiming to educate people about HIV/AIDS and help raise funds for those living with it.

Mission Possible Conference preparation was done months before 1st of May. Yet the day before, everyone was still busy preparing, checking and making sure of things.

We did our best to make sure everything was in place...til we also got crazy.

DAY 1
The day came. 1st of May. People started to walk into the hall of Kolej 5.

Registration time. After checking into the rooms, we waited for the bus and headed off to the Medical and Health Science Faculty!

Kudos to AIESEC UPM facilitators, the opening plenary was very friendly and hype~! :) And the conference started off...with ice breaking of course! :P

Delegates had a quality time thinking and discussing with others.

Not to forget, with the interns from Netherlands, India, Nepal and Korea around, the MPC was even more merrier than ever!

"Challenges to Humanity" - A seminar talk by Malaysian AIDS Council.

And next we had interesting sessions by the Pink Triangle Foundation! A huge thank you to them to come all the way to join us~

There were different workshops for the delegates - Sex workers, Transgender, HIV positive living, Drug users and the MSM (Men have sex with men)

"How to wear a condom" demonstration at the Sex Workers and HIV positive workshop

MSM and transgender workshop~ The most happening workshop that day I guessed.

Facilitator Kaiser and Angy from Korea, being paired as a couple at the HIV positive living workshop~

Open discussion at Transgender workshop. A great time where thoughts were poured out and views were discussed. Thanks to all proactive participants and great staffs from PTF too!

Upon request, "Wearing a condom with your mouth" demonstration was done in front of all of the delegates. Cool! Try to guess how many cameras were aiming at that moment.

After a whole day of seminar and workshops of exposure, MPC cool down the night by having a movie and a night stalk game~ :)

DAY 2
We started off the day with.... BODY COMBAT by Celebrity Fitness!!! HOT GUYS!

Never knew that the delegates could be so cool~

Then we have a talk by AWAM. The best part of that seminar was when videos of drug abuse were played.

After sessions of HIV/AIDS ... we were thankful to have Alumni Edward to share his experience during the marketing workshop.

At night, it was a time for enjoyment -> RED PARTY!!!

Square dance must not be left out..:P
Congrats again to the luckydraw winners carrying home together prizes worth total RM1500 sponsored by Celebrity Fitness!:)

DAY 3
A special starting of the day with some magical moments~
We were glad to have Mentalist David Lai to join us during MPC for a comedy mind reading session!

David and Flora on stage. David did a great performance and I believe everyone still remembers how he BENDED THE SPOON...or CHANGED THE TIME OF PULKHIT'S WATCH without touching it. :)

After the "wow" and "ah" during the comedy mind reading session, delegates were off to a visitation at PTF Drop in centre!!! Yay! Out of campus!

Delegates get the opportunities to get close contact with the people itself. Nicholas was raising up questions about Sex workers in Malaysia.

Small group picture~ Visitations were done in rotations because the number of visitors allowed are only 15-20.

We visited the Positive living, Transgender, and Sex workers drop in centres at TanCom building, run by Pink Triangle Foundation. Later on, all of us walked through Jalan Chow Kit (not exactly) and some fortunate ones spotted some Sex Workers along the street. It was indeed a very eye-opening visitation especially to those who did not ever get in touch with the 5 marginalised groups in Malaysia, before.

After a whole tiring visitation, we slept our way back on the bus. And boom! It's marketing simulation time!!

Brainstormed for ideas and tried their best to market their ideas~ :) U guys did very well!

At night, it was the Mission Possible session!

Teams were to fight for 80 candles at 4 stations...

Too bad HOPE Project Director Soon Kit will not laugh to give you the candles that easily my dear.... :P

Flora and Kaiser! Another station where the facis and OCs get to have fun too~! Hit your butt all the way through and fight for the candles~~~! A station where everyone really had thorough fun!

The first candle was started off by Conference manager Rue-Hann...and it proceeds...continuing the flame of HOPE.

Mission Accomplished. A ribbon candle of HOPE, lighted with 600 candles.
This could not be done without YOUR participation. :)

The ribbon reminded us to always remember those who are suffering from HIV/AIDS, and to help them, as well as help others to prevent from being infected.

What a sweet and memorable night to end with.

DAY 4 - LAST DAY
It was a day to help raise funds....and we headed off to Sungei Wang Plaza!!!!

In less than 3 hours we collected approximately RM2000 which made everyone proud. ;)

We know we did not play a very big role in preventing HIV/AIDS.
Yet, little contributions always help when you want to make a change.

18th of May is AIDS memorial day.

PT foundation or welknown as Pink Triangle Foundation invited me and Fang Yee to witness the time capsule planting at Aquaria KLCC. Previously, HOPE project had PTF's participation during Mission Possible Conference and Treasuring Lives Charity Dinner.

I asked Dani whether is it possible to bring Sze and Pey along, he said "Ok but if there's not enough food you have to catch the fish from the tank"

OMG!!! And he actually tried to scare me off while I was taking pictures of the fishes...Bad bad Dani!!!

This is the opening of AIDS memorial day. There were representatives of the 5 marginalised groups in Malaysia - namely the Sex workers, transgender, MSM (men who have sex with men), HIV positive living, and drug users. Also, there are representatives from a young 23 years old mother with her baby, an entrepreneur who's married, and a lecturer. They pledged on behalf of the people and yeap, their pledges were placed into the time capsule too! :)

Previously, during Mission Possible Conference, we had a fund raising event at Sungei Wang. At the moment we also gathered signatures of people who supported us fighting HIV/AIDS. Proudly to say that the names are all also in the time capsule~ :)

Time capsule planting into the aquarium of 9 big sharks! Seriously they were HUGE!!! Malaysian Aids Council president Dr Adeeba and also Aquawalk Sdn Bhd's Aquaria KLCC's group managing director and CEO Dato Simon Foong took part in the planting of the time capsule.

Coincidently, it was also Dato' Simon's birthday. His wife actually asked him to blow the candle which is outside of the aquarium where as he's in it! It was a very warm moment~ I love things like this. Enjoy it with me:

ESSAY-WRITING COMPETITION

“People and AIDS”

“You can't do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth.”

People think that “AIDS” is a synonym for “imminent death”. But the sad reality is that, the suffering is not from the pain, but from the people around. The stigma and discrimination associated with AIDS itself is sufficient to ‘kill’ these people. The fact society fails to notice is that no one wants to bear agony willingly. Think of mothers who bear their child for 10 months, with each second of it filled with guilt of giving birth to a HIV positive child? Do we still want to punish them further?

Surprisingly, AIDS-the disease that breaks families, cripples the society and takes life, has also been the reason to get people together. Volunteer works all around the world are the best examples. People from different walks of life, different background and beliefs are emerging to give these unlucky people a shoulder to lie and cry over. The support is compelling, and yet it is still insufficient.

As the peak of a civilization is reflected by its people, each of us should take the first step to make a difference in someone’s life. Let us fight AIDS, and not people with AIDS.

Propping her arms on the seat of the toilet bowl, she shuts her eyes in anticipation of a regurgitation that would never take place. Since that cup of tea she had in the morning, waves of nausea have been hitting her every tenth of a minute. Having knelt on the cold bathroom floor in the same position for hours, she felt like her arms were going to give way, mirroring the way she felt about her own life. Her tears were all spent over the last few rainy days spent indoors, quietly crying because she couldn’t keep up with the terrifying rate at which her body deteriorated.

The new protease inhibiting pills that she recently started taking on a tediously painstaking schedule might be slowing down her HIV infection, as her doctor promised, but the frequent bouts of nausea and fatigue were extremely hard to cope with. It made so many more of her acquaintances aware of her disease, and so much less of them who would be able to stand next to her without fearing for themselves. She knew the feeling of fear well. It was something that she wakes up with every morning.

1) Human as your focus

Think HIV/AIDS - Do NOT take the picture of a real living HIV+ person. Consider getting a prototype, you may wish to vary the surrounding to give a more realistic effect e.g. suburban area, red-light district, etc.
Think Healthy Living! How are you able to abstain from the disease?

2) Object (relevant to theme)

Consider object (s) which most people can recognize upon seeing it.
